Woodstock
Overview
Woodstock Forest, Gardens & Arboretum are a key visitor attraction in Kilkenny. There are three looped walks giving you a chance to explore the wider woodlands the stunning waterfall and the fabulous gardens of the old Woodstock House. The South Leinster Way long distance walking route also goes through Woodstock.
Formally the Tighe family estate it is now owned and managed by Kilkenny County Council who have the old house (in ruins) and the gardens and arboretum, and the woodlands surrounding are owned and managed by Coillte.
Things to do
Woodstock Loop – moderate – 4.5Km / 1-1.5hrs – Red markers
Ladies Loop – 3km/ 45mins-1hr – moderate – Blue markers
These two loops follow forest tracks and woodland trails, they start in the village and go down a quaint laneway and along to an old jetty before going into the woodlands along the old Point Road, along the way you will pass an old icehouse that was used by the estate to keep food fresh. You will also the old folly of Mt. Sanford Castle, if you go in and stand and look out of the arched window you will get a fabulous view of the village below.
Woodstock Waterfall Loop – moderate – 4.5km/ 1-1.5hrs – Green markers
The Waterfall Loop starts Woodstock house and leads you down to a lovely waterfall and over a bridge where you can stand and admire the falls as the cascade down. A lot of this walk is on old paths that were art of the estate, so steeped in history. You can also reach the waterfall from the village if you continue on from the Woodstock Loop, but this will add an additional 4 km to your walk.
