Lough Key Forest Park
Planning Update - June 2026
Roscommon County Council has granted planning permission for the redevelopment of Lough Key Forest and Activity Park. This is a significant milestone for the project. The focus now shifts to meeting all planning conditions, working with project partners, and engaging funding partners to secure investment. Delivery will progress in stages as these steps are completed.
We would like to acknowledge the support of Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme, co-funded by the EU and the Government of Ireland under the EU Just Transition Fund. This funding enabled the development of the strategic plan that has now received planning approval.

Overview
Lough Key Forest & Activity Park is one of Coillte’s flagship visitor destinations, offering a wide range of activities set against spectacular lake views, rich wildlife, historic buildings and multiple islands. With almost 200,000 visits recorded in 2025, and the historic Rockingham estate as its backdrop, the park has developed into a unique destination serving the needs of today’s visitor, with a lakeside Centre providing an ideal base for both leisurely and more energetic pursuits.
The Rockingham Remembered Tour takes you on an engaging audio journey through the history, flora and fauna of the Park, using the 19th century underground tunnels, the refurbished Moylurg viewing tower and a Tree Canopy Walk. This 300m walkway of timber and steel rises 9m above the woodland floor, offering a bird’s eye view of nature and panoramic views across the island-studded lake.
Boda Borg is a weather-independent indoor activity concept containing fun-filled challenges, imaginative puzzles and enjoyable tasks – with no instructions. Only teamwork, ingenuity and trial and error will get you from room to room.
The outdoor Adventure Play Kingdom is an enclosed play area for children, with towers, slides, climbing frames, swings, puzzles and other equipment providing hours of entertainment for a range of ages and abilities.
You can also stay in the Caravan and Camping Park and take time to explore the 350-hectare estate, from its 19th century parkland with majestic trees, follies, bridges and canals, to the walks and trails through native woodlands, the Bog Garden and Coillte forests.
