Coillte’s Cratloe Wood Successful at RDS Forestry Awards

Coillte’s Cratloe Wood was voted the winner of the National RDS forestry awards under the Multipurpose Forestry category this year.

The Multipurpose Forestry category is open to individuals and organisations that are expanding or developing existing or new forest habitats through natural and environmentally sensitive methods. Judges will take into account the planning and management of the area, ecological awareness, social benefit, silviculture methods, control of grazing animals and invasive species, as well as sensitive felling and thinning.

Coillte’s Cratloe Wood is located just a short drive west of Limerick and close to the world famous Bunratty Castle. Cratloe Wood Car Park and Picnic Site is located very close to Cratloe village. Cratloe Forest property itself is over 700 hectares in extent. The Wood overlooks the Estuary of the river Shannon which is the longest river in Ireland and Great Britain. The Galtee Mountains in County Tipperary can be seen to the east, the Ballyhoura Mountains in North Cork to the south and Shannon Airport to the west.

There is an extensive road network throughout the wood suitable for walking and there is also a playground and picnic site for visitors to enjoy.

Coillte’s Tintern Abbey was also recognised in the 2019 Awards as runner up for its role as a community woodland.
