Tourmakeady means the bleach field of the Keady family. The bleach field was where flax was laid out in the sun for bleaching and dying before spinning. This area of Co Mayo was formerly part of the Moores Estate. In 2000 a section of the wood was set aside to establish a millennium forest to commemorate the 21st century.
Improvement works have been carried out at Tourmakeady under the neighbourwood scheme funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
