Overview

Tucked away in the lush hills of County Leitrim, Scardan Waterfall is a breathtaking natural wonder waiting to be explored. Located along the national waymarked way “Miners Way”, this enchanting cascade offers long distance walkers a welcomed resting spot on their scenic journey. Alternatively, you can visit this site via car, making use of the small car park provided for 3-4 vehicles.

The name Scardan is said to mean “mist that comes off a waterfall as the water rushes down”—a poetic description that perfectly captures the ethereal atmosphere of the site.

From the waterfall’s vantage point, you’ll be treated to sweeping views over Lough Allen, one of Ireland’s most picturesque lakes. The surrounding area is ideal for photography, picnicking, or simply soaking in the peaceful ambiance. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual nature lover, Scardan Waterfall offers a moment of magic in the heart of the Irish countryside.

From the car park, visitors will descend down a steep stair case to a viewing platform located among the tree canopy to view the falls. It is particularly impressive following large rainfall events. Despite being one of Coillte’s smallest recreation areas, visitors to this site will note the gigantic viewing opportunities available.
