Things to do
Mocollop Church & Castle: Begin your walk at the trailhead where Mocollop Church stands to the south, with the striking ruins of Mocollop Castle rising behind. These historic structures date back to the Norman period, with the castle’s unique circular keep and remnants of a drawbridge and moat offering a glimpse into medieval Ireland.
Glen Road & Mass Rock: As you ascend the Glen Road, a stream flows beside you toward the River Blackwater. Pause at the Mass Rock, a poignant reminder of gatherings for forbidden worship during Penal times.
Woodland Trail & Scenic Vistas: Turning onto the woodland path, you’ll be greeted by vibrant displays of foxglove and furze. A panoramic view opens across the Blackwater Valley, stretching west to Careysville House and eastward to the majestic Lismore Castle.
Wildlife & Waterfalls: On your descent, keep an eye out for wild strawberries in season and enjoy the soothing sounds of tumbling waterfalls. As you cross the bridge, take in the postcard-perfect view of Mocollop Church and Castle before returning to the car park.
