Black Island
Overview
Welcome to Black Island, this forested island is part of the larger Lough Muckno Leisure Park in Castleblayney, which offers a wide variety of things to do for the whole family, Playgrounds for the little ones and Walking Trails, Nature Walks, Picnic areas and even world class fishing.
There are plenty of parking areas within the Leisure Park and all within easy distance of the wooden bridge that crosses the Lough and leads you to the start of the forest walks.
Things to do
There are 5 way marked walks in the forest on Black Island, some can be done as loops whilst others link the loops together allowing a variety of walking options, something to suit everyone.
The Black Island Walk – loop - easy – 2 km – 45 minutes – black arrow
The High Road – link – moderate = 1 km – 25 minutes – green arrow
The Bluebell Walk – link – moderate – 0.5 km – 15 minutes – dark blue arrow
The McBrides Walk – loop – easy – 1 km – 25 minutes – orange arrows
The Shoreline Walk – loop – easy – 1.5 km – 35 minutes – light blue arrow
Take a picture of the map on the trailhead before starting your walk in case you want to change your route along the way.
There is also a very popular park run on Black Island every Saturday morning.
