Bailieborough
Overview
A beautiful lake and forest walk traversing the Castle Lake outside Bailieborough. The walk begins at the lake car park of Bailieborough Demesne. Walkers can undertake a looped walk of the lake with the option of adding an extra leg to increase the distance of the walk by 3km. Visitors will enjoy views of the lake for the entire duration of the walk. There are many interesting sites along the way including a memorial to those who died at Rebel Hill in 1798, graves of the Marist brothers who occupied Bailieborough Castle and the remains of Bailieborough Castle, built in the early 19th century and demolished in the 1940’s.
Things to do
Walk: The Castle Loop is the longer of the two looped walks in the forest. Approximately 6.5km in length and takes about 2 hours to walk. Follow the purple markers from the car park. The Lake Loop is the shorter of the two looped walks in the forest, it is approximately 3.5km in length and takes about an hour to walk, follow the blue markers from the car park and it will take you on an easy walk around the lake. After about 500m there is a memorial to those who died at Rebel Hill in 1798. There are plenty of viewing points of the lake along the way, and on your way back to the car park you will also pass a track leading to a rath on the top of Rebel Hill.
