{"id":6350,"date":"2021-02-16T10:02:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T10:02:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coillte.ie\/development\/?p=6350"},"modified":"2021-02-16T10:02:03","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T10:02:03","slug":"visitor-numbers-triple-to-coilltes-local-forests-during-coivd-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coillte.ie\/development\/visitor-numbers-triple-to-coilltes-local-forests-during-coivd-lockdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Visitor numbers triple to Coillte\u2019s local forests during Covid lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2.2 million visits to Coillte\u2019s most popular local forests since March, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Top ten forest locations include: Dublin, Monaghan, Kildare, Wexford\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Date: 16 February, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Coillte reveals visitor numbers to some of its most popular recreational forests have doubled to tripled since lockdown began last year, depending on location.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overall, visitor numbers to the country\u2019s top 50 forests were 2.2 million from the beginning of March to the end of December 2020.<\/li>\n<li>As Coillte has c.6,000 forest properties, the number of visitors across the nation\u2019s forests is a multiple of this.<\/li>\n<li>This represents an overall increase of 38% from 1.6 million# for the same period in 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some forests like the Dublin Mountains, Rossmore in Monaghan and Donadea in Kildare experienced doubling or tripling of visitor numbers. See table.<\/p>\n<p>The Dublin Mountains (of which Ticknock Forest accounts for the majority) is the most visited, followed by Rossmore Forest Park, Co. We simply ask that Covid~ restrictions be adhered to when visiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top ten things you didn\u2019t know about Ireland\u2019s local forests: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>There are approximately 6,000 Coillte forest properties nationwide, all of which are open to the public.<\/li>\n<li>There are 260 Coillte managed recreational forests.<\/li>\n<li>Forests clean the air we breathe and convert CO<sub>2<\/sub> into O<sub>2<\/sub>. Our forests are the biggest carbon sink in the country, cleaning the equivalent of 70% of car emissions p.a.<\/li>\n<li>They provide homes for a myriad of natural wildlife including deer, red squirrels, badgers, owls and insects to name but a few.<\/li>\n<li>Almost 80% of Coillte\u2019s forests are working forests. They produce the most commonly used wood in modern Irish homes. The wood in the roofs, walls and floors is made from a coniferous tree called Sitka Spruce, a species especially suited to growing in Ireland\u2019s wet and temperate climate.<\/li>\n<li>Many trees can grow twice as fast in Ireland compared with Europe, due to our soil and climate<\/li>\n<li>Commercial forestry supports around 12,000 jobs in mostly rural areas.<\/li>\n<li>When carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) is converted into Oxygen (O<sub>2<\/sub>) the remaining carbon element is stored in the tree. That is why wood\/trees are described as a great store for carbon.<\/li>\n<li>Wood is a renewable resource and it is widely agreed that forests are one of the fastest and most eco-friendly ways to help tackle climate change.<\/li>\n<li>All of Coillte\u2019s forests are managed sustainably \u2013 to the exacting standard set by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC is an internationally recognised benchmark for certifying high quality sustainable forest management.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Notes for Editors <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>#Visitor numbers to Coillte from the beginning of March 2019 to the end December 2019 were 1,591,498.<\/li>\n<li>*The Dublin Mountains include Ticknock, Tibradden, Hellfire, Cruagh, Barnaslingan, Kilmashogue, Massey\u2019s Wood and Ballyedmonduff.<\/li>\n<li>Nomad Counter uses infra-red heat sensors to measure visitors to the forest. A Magnetometer\/vehicle counter) measures cars and assumes 2.5 people per vehicle.<\/li>\n<li>~Please respect the 2m social distancing between forest users and the 5km distance from your home required during Level 5.
