Nursery Production Supervisor

Role Objective

The role has responsibility at nursery level for implementation of plant production programs in line with agreed budgetary targets. The role operates in the context of a rapidly changing operating environment which will increasingly impact on the ability of nursery stock producers to maintain growing standards without increasing costs. It requires innovative thinking and a total commitment to best practice/business process development in order to maintain Coillte Nurseries at the forefront of commercial plant production.

Responsibilities

People, Organisation and Culture

  • Supervise contractors to ensure that they deliver operatonal targets, meet quality standards and provide excellent value for money.
  • Promote a commercial culture in Nurseries where decisions are made with full consideration of maximising revenue and reducing cost.
  • Promote an attitude of simplification to reduce complexity and allow us to do our best work.
  • Actively promote and prioritise a safe working environment for our people, our contractors and customers in Nurseries.
  • Be accountable for developing own contribution to the business which includes driving personal development initiatives.
  • Support full compliance with statutory requirements and best practice in terms of health & safety management, environmental management, procurement of goods & services, and other corporate governance.
  • Act as a visible role model for the Group’s values.

Planning

  • Assist in the planning & supervise implementation of production programs in the context of achieving delivery of planned numbers of stock to required market specifications, and costs of production sufficient to allow an adequate gross margin on sales.
  • Active engagement with other members of the wider Nurseries Team including nursery contractors and hauliers to ensure proper management of plant stock levels to meet customer orders.
  • Input into the annual Nursery budgetary planning process.
  • Specific focus on learning and assimilation of technical expertise and practical management experience required for the commercial production of forest plants.

Operations

  • Organise and supervise staff, contractors and resources to complete operatonal programs to agreed timeframes.
  • Ensure that contractors are implementing standardised and best practices to ensure that all operations are carried out to the required guidelines.
  • Support a strong culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement in Nurseries to eliminate waste and inefficiency.

Customers

  • Active engagement with other members of the Production Team within Coillte Nurseries as a prerequisite to the delivery of consistent levels of profitability and exceptional levels of customer service.
  • Engage proactively with the team to support relationships and the effectiveness of the Nurseries Production Team.
  • Support the input into the development of the Nurseries business, particularly in terms of production management.
  • Understand the needs of internal and external stakeholders.

Desired Technical / Professional Qualities

  • Education and Experience: Relevant qualification in Forestry or related discipline with a minimum of five years’ experience.
  • Forestry: Has in-depth forestry knowledge to sustain the productive capacity of the estate.
  • Commercial Acumen: The knowledge to manage financials to maintain profitability and value of the estate.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge and experience to promote a safe-working environment and ensure compliance with environmental, regulatory and silvicultural standards.
