Dublin Mountains Makeover – Virtual Site Visit

If you’ve been following the Dublin Mountains Makeover, you may have already visited our dedicated project page, watched our video introducing the project, read our progress updates on the blog, checked out our Beginner’s Guides to the two main forestry techniques we’re using (CCF and R&R) and noticed some of the signage we’ve been installing on site.

But it’s not quite the same as getting out on the ground with a forester for a site visit, is it?

The team had really hoped to be able to lead walks and talks out on the ground to explain what we’re doing, where and why in more detail and answer your questions. We’re erring on the side of caution with regards to the public health advice though, so unfortunately this hasn’t been possible.

Luckily, the Dublin Mountains Makeover is a long-term plan, so there will be many more opportunities to host public events and workshops in the years to come.

In the meantime, we’ve put together a longer ‘Virtual Site Visit’ video for anyone who’s interested in understanding the practicalities of the project in more detail. In it, Coillte Nature’s Operations Manager, Karen Woods, visits the five different types of forest in the Makeover:

  1. Mature Sitka spruce forests
  2. Younger Sitka spruce forests
  3. Mixed woodlands
  4. Forests where we’re changing the species
  5. Burnt forests where we’re changing the species

She explains everything you need to know about the what we're doing in each of these forest types, and what the long-term benefits will be for the Dublin Mountains and everyone who loves them.
