District W3. Connemara / Mayo District Strategic Plan 2006 - 2010
The Connemara and Mayo District (W3) of Coillte Forest encompasses the Connemara area of County Galway and the entire county of Mayo, a total area of over seven and a half thousand square kilometres or 11% of Irelands surface area. Within this area, Coillte owns 57,941 Hectares, or 8% of the land area, of which 78% is forested with the remainder mostly moorland, marsh and lakes.
The rainfall level is high in the extreme western parts of the District, with rain on more than 250 days a year with an average rainfall of over 1000mm and with up to 3000mm per year falling in western mountainous areas. This factor, together with geological and physio-graphical factors has significantly influenced the development of soil types. These rain-bearing westerly winds often lead to very wet ground conditions in plantations and timber harvesting can be difficult due to the reduced load-bearing capacity of the soils.
