District W1. Clare / South Galway District Strategic Plan 2006 - 2010
District W1 is one of 13 districts in Coillte and is located in the mid-west. It embraces all of County Clare and a section of County Galway, south of the Kinvara, Gort, Loughrea, Portumna road.
Forest properties are widespread throughout the District, with a greatest forest density located in the Slieve Aughty hills, greater than 20,000ha to the North West of the District and Slieve Barnagh in South East Clare.
There are four main lakes, i.e. Lough Derg, Lough Graney, Doolough and Lough Cutra and seven main river catchments, i.e. Shannon, Graney, Derrywee, Boleyneendoreish, Woodford, Fergus and Doonbeg.
