District S4. Southwest Peninsulas District Strategic Plan 2006 - 2010
This district is located in West Cork and South Kerry and is renowned for its scenery. Tourism is a major contributor to the economy of the area and therefore forests in the landscape and how they are treated are a major consideration. Our forests have a high recreational usage, long distance walking routes such as the Kerry Way and the Sheep's Head Way traverse many of Coillte's properties.
Plantation forestry has a relatively short history in south Kerry and west Cork. A look at the age class distribution of Coillte's estate in this District shows only 152 hectares of forest greater than 70 years old. Some of the earlier plantings took place in areas like Dromore Wood near Kenmare, Rossacroo near Kilgarvan, Glendav near Ballvourney, Aultagh near Dunmanway, Gougane Barra and in many of the woodlands around Killarney. It was in the 1960s and 1970s that large scale state afforestation took place in this area, private afforestation was not significant until the late 1980s and 1990s. The investment in state afforestation during this period has resulted in Coillte owning some 27,865 hectares of forest in the District.
This District boasts the greatest concentration of mountains in any of Coillte's 13 Districts, south Kerry alone has Carrauntoohil, Irelands highest mountain (3,414 feet) and 8 other peaks rising over 3,000 feet. West Cork on the other hand is renowned for its rugged rocky landscape.
