The Forest area of the District South 2 (S2) extends from North Tipperary through County Limerick, North and West Kerry and adjoining parts of North Cork.  The total land area is 38,952 ha of which 34,100 ha is under tree production, the balance is bare plantable, open space, scrub, undeveloped, water etc. The District forest properties are widespread throughout this geographical area, with the larger forest units generally coinciding with the Slieve Felim, Mullaghareirks, and Stack's mountain ranges. Two of the District's forests are located in a highly scenic area ie. West Kerry - a prime area for tourism making landscape and recreational opportunities a major consideration.
