The district S1 embraces the Counties Waterford, South Tipperary and the south east corner of County Limerick. Coillte owns and manages 36,098.46 ha in the district of which 28,241.06 is under forest cover.   In general forestry in the district is on good quality soils where there is potential to grow high quality timber, enrich biodiversity in the region as well as providing for cultural and recreational facilities.

The main mountain ranges in the district are the Comeraghs, the Knockmealdowns, the Galtees, and Slievenamon with the Suir Valley being the main river catchment.
