The District is made up of the following counties; Westmeath, Longford, Meath, Louth, Monaghan, almost all of Cavan and a small portion of Leitrim bordering Northern Ireland to the north, the Irish Sea to the east, Dublin, Kildare and Offaly to the south and the river Shannon to the west. These counties cover approximately 20% of the land area in the Republic of Ireland of which the total District area is 2.4%. The estate is made up of almost 700 forest blocks scattered throughout these counties, the average size of these forest blocks is 31.6 ha.
Recreation plays an important role in the District. There are three forest parks in Dun-a-Ri, Rossmore and Killykeen. In addition there are numerous other amenity areas, recreation areas and waymarked ways that attract a high public usage.
