District N2. Sligo / Leitrim District Strategic Plan 2006 - 2010
This District (N2) covers all of County Sligo, most of County Leitrim, North West Cavan and North Roscommon with a total area of 32,500 hectares of which 74% is forested, with the remainder being open space.
The main mountains occurring are the Ox Mountains, Dartry Mountains, the Cuilcagh Mountains and Slieve Anerin and as a result hill walking is popular. The Sligo area is often referred to as the "Killarney" of the North West due to its very scenic landscapes and as a result is a very popular tourist destination. There are a number of concentrated forest blocks but there are a lot of individual small forest areas.
The District has areas in three of the main river basins i.e. North Western Region, Shannon Region and the Western Region. The main lakes present are Lough Melvin, Lough Gill, Lough Arrow, Lough Key and Lough Allen. There is a significant amount of archaeological features occurring on the estate with a concentration occurring in the Burren in Co. Cavan.
