District N1. Donegal District Strategic Plan 2006 - 2010

The District (N1) covers all of County Donegal with a total area of 43,591 hectares of which 74% is forested, with the remainder being open space. 
The main mountains occurring are the Bluestack and Derryveagh Mountains and Pettigo.  The main soil types present are high and low level blanket peats, peaty podsols, gleys and acid brown earths.  The climate is characterised by high rainfall, distributed relatively evenly throughout the year. Frequent high wind speeds are also a characteristic of the climate, with the prevailing wind direction from the Southwest. 
The main river catchments are the Finn, Leannan, Swilly, Gweebarra, Owenea and the Eske.  The main lakes present are Lough Eske, Lough Derg and Gartan.
The District has a management team of 12, with an industrial staff of 36.  There is also a significant amount of contract work carried out in timber harvesting and haulage, forest establishment and road building.
