The Midland District covers counties Kildare, Laois and Offaly. The district has a forest area of just over 30,000 ha, approximately 50% of which is in Co. Laois, 30% in Co. Offaly and the remaining 20% in Co. Kildare. Forest distribution ranges from large concentrated blocks in the highly productive Slieve Bloom area, to a less concentrated pattern of mainly medium sized forest areas within 15 - 20 km of Portlaoise. With the exception of the large blocks of young plantations on the Bord na Móna cutaways in Offaly and Kildare, the rest of the district is mainly characterised by smaller properties widely dispersed throughout the district.
