Coillte Forest

Land Use Type - Definitions

High Forest

HIGH FOREST is defined as a conifer or broadleaf tree crop of yield class 4 or greater. Definitions of the fourteen Land Use Types are as follows:

  1. Conifer High Forest: An area of HIGH FOREST with a minimum of 20% productive area, evenly distributed, where more than 80% of the trees are conifers (by number or canopy). The minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha.
  2. Mixed High Forest: An area of HIGH FOREST with a minimum of 20% productive area, evenly distributed, of both conifers and broadleaves, where the minor category occupies at least 20% of the stocked area (by number or canopy). The minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha.
  3. Broadleaf High Forest: An area of HIGH FOREST with a minimum of 20% productive area, evenly distributed, where more than 80% of the trees are broadleaves (by number or canopy). Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha.
  4. Undeveloped: An area where more than 80% of a conifer crop lacks the potential to develop as HIGH FOREST and is available for planting. Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha.
  5. Scrub: An area where more than 80% of a broadleaf crop of stunted trees or shrubs lacks the potential to develop as HIGH FOREST, and is available for planting. Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha.
  6. Felled: An area where more than 80% of the subcompartment has been felled (i.e. a merchantable crop has been removed) and has not yet been reforested, provided there is still evidence of the former crop (stumps, etc). Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha. Where there is no evidence of the former crop the area should be given the appropriate LUT (Bare plantable, Bare marginal etc.).
  7. Blown: An area where more than 80% of the subcompartment has been blown and has not yet been removed. Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha.
  8. Burned: An area where more than 80% of the subcompartment has been burned and has not yet been replanted / reforested, provided there is still evidence of the former crop (stumps, burned stems, etc). Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha. Where there is no evidence of the former crop the area should be given the appropriate LUT (Bare plantable, Bare marginal etc.).
  9. Bare Plantable: Bare land, which could grow a HIGH FOREST Conifer crop of minimum yield class 14. Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha. Bare Plantable should normally be described separately from Felled, Blown or Burned areas.
  10. Bare Marginal: Bare land that could grow a HIGH FOREST Conifer tree crop of yield class 4-12. Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.5 ha.

All the above ten Land Use Types describe land that is occupied by forestry or is suitable for forestry.

The following are definitions for four unplantable Land Use Types (11-14):
  11. Bare Unplantable: Land on which a HIGH FOREST tree crop of maximum yield class 4 could not reasonably be established using present techniques. Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.2 ha.
  12. Swamp: Land which is unplantable because it is waterlogged for most or all of the year. Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.2 ha.
  13. Water: Lakes, ponds, reservoirs and also rivers where the width of the river within the compartment is at least 20m (i.e. if the compartment boundary and the centre of the river coincide, the river must be at least 40m wide). Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.2 ha.

Some large lakes that are within the forest property boundary are not part of any of the surrounding compartments. Each such lake must be given a compartment number.

Land along the bank of a river or lake that happens to be flooded at time of resurvey should not be included in the water category.
  14. Miscellaneous: Buildings and other permanent structures, yards, car parks, archaeological sites, etc. Official residences and attached grounds where they are still owned by Coillte are also included. Minimum size of subcompartment is 0.2 ha.

Small car parks should be included in this category if the area of the car park and any surrounding unplanted land is at least 0.2 ha, provided the actual parking area occupies the greater proportion of the subcompartment.
