Nature Conservation
We recognise that biodiversity and nature conservation are an integral part of forest management, and we will:
- Continue to manage statutory designated sites in association with partners, through management arrangements and monitoring systems;
- Continue the process of ecological inventory, aimed at identifying habitat networks requiring nature conservation measures, and instigating monitoring to support sustainable management;
- Pursue the process of identifying, recording, managing, and protecting biodiversity features across the estate;
- Continue the process of enhancing biodiversity in non-designated parts of the forest, focussing especially on diversifying the spatial and structural elements (e.g. open space, canopy structure and dead wood), and fully reflecting the diversity of soil and site types;
- Retain dead wood in all forests managed by Coillte, consistent with health and safety requirements. In order to optimise environmental benefits, the provision of dead wood will differ according to forest type; and
- Pursue a programme of increasing staff awareness aimed at establishing an ethos of biodiversity conservation that is fully integrated into all aspects of Coillte's management.
