Project Conference-Four Years of LIFE Restoration at Coillte Woods

LIFE05 NAT/IRL/000182
Project Conference
Results of a four year woodland restoration project
Co-financed by the EU LIFE programme and Coillte
Date:6th-7th October 2009
Venue: McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland
Description
A two day international conference was organised by the woodland restoration project team in Coillte to mark the end of the project, publicise its results and discuss future management of priority woodland habitats.
In one of the largest projects of its kind to take place in this country, over 550 hectares of rare or priority woodland habitat have been restored through the removal of exotic species and creation of conditions to allow natural regeneration of native trees.
The conference is one of the many ways that Coillte has been sharing the achievements of this restoration project. These project sites will be incorporated into Coillte's biodiversity programme under which it manages 15% of its estate primarily for biodiversity.
Coillte are very grateful to those who contributed to the conference in any way and to those who carried out the restoration works on the ground at nine locations across the country
