Senator Billy Fox Park

This area of land (6.3ha) near Cootehill in County Cavan was donated to the Bawn Latton Community Development Group in 1974. The land development group set about developing the park to the memory of Senator Billy Fox who was the only member of the Oireachtas to be assassinated during the Northern Troubles. Mr. John Haughey, of the then Forest and Wildlife Service gave assistance to the Local Group, in the hope of developing the park in line with Dún a Rí Park. This task proved too great for local people who received park area from the Irish Land Commission, and in 1976, the Billy Fox Memorial Park was given to the Forest and Wildlife Service as a gift, on condition that it be maintained as a public amenity.

The park was originally attached to Cootehill Forest, only 8 miles away, and was well maintained for a period. However, when Coillte came into being in 1989, management of this amenity moved to Monaghan 20 miles away and with increased work loads, the park started to deteriorate. In 1995, the Bawn Latton Development Association approached Coillte and requested that a FÁS Working Group be established to improve the recreational facilities at the park. The Group was than set up under permit and specification to Coillte, and the park started to regain a good appearance. Sections of walls were built, a grid installed, shelters erected, and a paddle pod installed. In 2000, a new footbridge was installed and opened by Minister Frank Fahey, along with a number of other bridges in the area. In addition, new timber seats were installed in the park. New signage is currently being erected on the approach roads to the park.
