Glenroe Walking Trails, Co. Limerick
Contrary to popular belief, Glenroe is in Co Limerick and last year its hardworking Walks Committee launched the Glenroe Walking Trails.
Coillte's property Daragh Wood, forms the centre of these two new walks. The longer walk is approximately 16km (kilometres) long, and 11 km of this passes through Coillte land. The second walk is shorter, at 7½ km, of which 5km of this goes through Coillte land.
This local Walks Committee was formed in August 2000 under the chairmanship of John Hennessy. They first sought permission from Coillte Manager Liam O'Connor and the adjoining farmers to develop the trails. The marking, measuring and development of these routes was carried out by a FÁS Community Employment Project under the auspices of Ballyhoura Development.
Just one year later the walks were officially opened. The work of the committee was highly complimented, for the initiative that was taken and with such determination. Coillte is delighted to be part of such a worthwhile community project.
