Partnership established between Coillte and Clanrye Training and Employment Services

In 2002, Coillte entered into a partnership with Clanrye Training and Employment Services on a cross border INTERACT Programme, which endeavoured to get young people involved in environmental work and team building exercises.

The project was part of a programme which enabled a group of 21 young people from the Newry/Dundalk border region to come together as one cohesive group to carry out a number of outdoor projects in the Ravesdale/Forkhill area. This project also aimed to improve access to the way-marked ways for the enjoyment of local residents and visitors alike. The trainees were mainly 'access trainees', ie. people who did not fit comfortably into mainstream training.

The trainees undertook the repair and restoration of paths, fences and stiles to allow local people and visitors from both sides of the border to enjoy access to nationally recognised sites of importance such as Ravensdale forest, which overlaps with the Ring of Gullion Way.

The project involved the manufacture of seating (using hand tools only), and the erection of it at Ravensdale forest. The seating is arranged to give geographical directions showing North, South, East and West.
